Knollwood, on the National Register of Historic Places, was built for President Taft’s Secretary of the Treasury, Franklin MacVeagh, and later purchased by Ambassador Joseph Petrone. Built-in 1899, with panoramic views of the nearby Mount Monadnock and the hills to the south, a number of Queen Anne-style chimneys project from the hip roof.
